Subwoofer Shopping Guide

Why add a subwoofer?

Car subwoofers main purpose is provide the low frequencies that car speakers can’t handle as well. No matter how loud you listen to your music or no matter what music you listen to, subwoofers is a crucial part of the overall listening experience. Subwoofers add depth and realism to your music. A subwoofer can make the difference between a great sound and an awesome sound.

There are a lot of different options to add a subwoofer to your car. Which subwoofer is right? These depend on what kind of music you listen to, your budget, and the amount of available space in your vehicle.

What do I look for when I am shopping for a subwoofer?

  • Power- If you want the high bass and loud boom, pay close attention to the subs RMS power ratings and not the peak power ratings. RMS ratings are the measurements for continuous power handling or output, while peak power is the most it can do. RMS ratings are more realistic measure than peak power. Most importantly, match the sub’s power handling to your amp’s power output.
  • Sensitivity- Sensitivity in a subwoofer is extremely important because a subwoofer with a higher rating requires less power to produce the same amount of sound than a model with a lower sensitivity rating.
  • Frequency range- Frequency range gives an idea of how low a subwoofer can actually play. The actual performance of the subwoofer can depend on a lot of variables.
  • Enclosure type- The type of enclosure a subwoofer is in will have a big effect on the type and quality of sound it produces. Ported boxes produce volume, while sealed enclosures produce the deepest, most accurate sound.
  • Size- Size doesn’t really affect any aspect of the sound quality. People seem to assume the bigger the better. This may be true to their setup, but don’t underestimate the smaller subs. In the right enclosure and setup, smaller subs can put out plenty of sound.
