Phos Bronze
What size tapping drill do I need to use for a 1/4" x 40 TPI ME (Model Engineering) Thread in Phos Bronze?

(not sure about imperial threads, but hope following helps with any metric threads that might crop up, and that it helps you figure out a rule for other threads you could encounter)

This (site) might be some help (the pages after it go into detail about individual thread patterns)

http://www.boltscience.com/pages/screw3.htm

What you want is to drill a hole that's the same size(or slightly bigger) as the minor diameter of the matching screw.

I'm not sure how to relate depth to the other details (dimensions?) of an imperial screw, but for a metric thread it happens to be the diameter minus the thread's pitch (so the pitch for metric screws must be twice the thread depth!).

eg.
A M5, 0.8 pitch , ideally needs a 4.2mm diameter drill.
A M5, 1mm pitch would need a 4mm hole drilled

From what Charlie says I guess the thread depth for the thread you're wanting is 1/64"
